“O those who believe, the fasts have been enjoined upon you as were enjoined upon those before you so that you be God-fearing.” Qur’aan 2-183

 The above Quraanic verse makes it obligatory for every believing Muslim to fast in the holy month of Ramadan. It carries a two fold message for the mankind, especially for Muslims. Firstly, it enjoins and ordains us to observe fast for Allah swt as an article of faith to achieve taqwa and purify our nafs (desires).Secondly, it acquaints us with a fact that saum was not first introduced to us but even earlier ummahs too were required to fast. The reference to the earlier Ummahs in the verse shows the importance of fasting on the one hand, and gives an encouragement to the Muslims on the other. It indicates that although there may be some inconvenience in fasting but the same inconven­ience was also faced by the earlier communities. This brings a psycho­logical comfort to the Muslims, because if an inconvenience is faced by a large number of people, it becomes easier to bear.

The word Ramadan is derived from the Arabic word Ramida, meaning intense scorching heat and dryness especially of the ground.. This intense scorching of ground can be compared to the thirst and hunger a person feels when he fast for sake for his lord and doesn’t even drink anything no matter how thirsty he is, so forget about having food or eating anything. The idea behind this is to sell a message that if we could stay away from something as basic and essential as food, imagine the power we can build up within ourselves to resist vices of different kinds and not forget about the positive energy that we accumulate within ourselves just through a simple process of faith.

Ramadan is not only about skipping meals, but it offers an opportunity to strengthen our faith, purify our heart and soul and remove the evil effects of the sins we have had committed. It offers a comprehensive program for our spiritual overhaul and an opportunity to rebuild our spiritual strength through certain objectives that are met when we fast. The objectives are

a) To get rid of bad habits: Fasting in Ramadan demands a strict and solid resolution to submit oneself to a special diet, which often corrects habits that are harmful to the health, that we get into during the running year, thus to comply with a severely regulated diet as a self-willed sacrifice. This is why we notice that the Holy Quran mentions patience, tolerance, will, and perseverance as being synonyms of fasting.

b) To be more compassionate: To suffer hunger and thirst so as to experience the difficult life of poor and needy. This endurance provokes in us a feeling of association with their sorrows and deprivations. This feeling is so humane, compassionate and much more expressive than a whole series of well-prepared speeches or well-organized public demonstrations. The rich people who never experience deprivation of food, but by fasting they discover the hardship faced by our less fortunate and poor brothers. This experience makes their hearts more tractable, and their hands, more active in exercising generosity and charity towards the needy. That is why we see a lot more charity happening during Ramadan when compared to other months in terms of zakhat i.e Islamic charity done to purify one’s wealth.

c) To Appreciate and be Thankful to God: we cannot know the real value of happiness until we lose it. So when we fast, we suffer hunger, thirst and deprivation of so many other leisure’s we usually enjoy before fasting. Then, we effectively evaluate the life comforts Mighty God has gifted us with.

d) Fast is like a living thing, which has a body and a soul. If we are not striving to refine our character by fast, our fast will be a body without soul. Fast cleanses our body from

impurities. Likewise, it must purify our heart and mind from all impure thoughts, improper desires and undisciplined sensations. When we fast, all our sense – eyes, ears, tongue, hands and feet – must fast with us. There are many more things apart being hungry that should be strictly followed so that our fast is accepted. These things actually help us to get more close to God and they are

Keeping our eyes off unlawful things.

Abstaining from hearing unlawful gossip and lies.

Stop telling lies, useless tales, spreading rumors and gossiping

And above all, our heart and mind should be with us in fasting.Because fasting in its real sense, will not be complete unless our thoughts, our emotions, our actions – in short, all aspects of our life – become pure, clean and free from blemish.
